I’m currently working on Health Dashboard Projects in the Division of Epidemiology, Department of Population Health, at NYU Langone Health. Geodesign builds greatly on a long history of work in geographic information science, computer-aided design, landscape architecture, and other environmental design fields. Once coursework is completed, PhD students move to the Comprehensive Exam, Qualifying Exam, and the writing of a dissertation, and final defense, if deemed appropriate by the doctoral committee. In the transition from coursework to exams, PhD students work on one paper beyond its original submission as coursework. The paper begins in the context of a departmental seminar, but often continues either in the context of an independent study, summer mentorship, or a second seminar with faculty consent. Upon the research paper’s acceptance, students begin preparing for their comprehensive exam.
Unit 5 : Presenting the Global Citizen
Students adapt their narrative from the previous assignment into a presentation to illustrate their work in a meaningful way. The class will first review examples of sequential art, with a focus on conveying cause and effect and changes over time. This review should include selecting still or video images that illustrate the current event and related social issue/s.
Designing with Science
It is clear that for serious societal and environmental issues, designing for change cannot be a solitary activity. It inevitably is a team endeavor with many participants from the design professions and geographic sciences, linked by technology from several locations for rapid communication and feedback, and reliant on transparent communication with the people affected by change. These demands create opportunities for geodesign and the need for organizing that collaboration. Be able to place spatial and geographic knowledge into an ethical context, especially how spatial sciences and geodesign principles can contribute to the resolution of ethical, social, and environmental issues. Geodesign brings together geographic information science (GIS), big data, science, computational power, architecture, landscape architecture, urban and regional planning and more to address challenges and issues presented by the built environment.

In this unit students will explore the physical systems of the earth by studying maps outlining the physical characteristics of a region and the physical processes that shape the patterns of Earth's surface. In addition to map studies, students will also explore the region's history of natural disasters and its influence on the ecosystems where individuals live, and how the physical geography creates the unique characteristics of different hubs of civilization in the region. Students will also explore their region's natural resources and analyze the utilization of resources and their relationship to a country’s gross domestic product, through mapping and graphs. Students will analyze their compiled data and make claims as to how effectively resources are handled regionally. Through this process of learning about a region's physical geography and creating visual representations of those aspects students learn how a region’s physical geography helps form a distinct culture and economy. Students will research and study a number of current global issues (such as climate change, overpopulation, international drug trade), which has an impact on societies and individuals around the world.
PhD students are trained to teach courses in the history and theory of architecture while also engaging in studio pedagogy and curatorial work. In addition to the colloquium, PhD students take a series of approved courses both at UCLA Architecture and Urban Design and across campus. They select these courses in relation to their own research interests and in consultation with their primary advisor.

Students report spending an average of 10 hours per week, per course on completing coursework for this program -- however, this is just an average. Those students who consider themselves to be very proficient with the professional use of computers tend to move more quickly through assignments and activities, while students with more limited computer proficiency often require more time each week. Student workloads tend to be highest in the Intro course as well as when students choose to take multiple courses concurrently. The certificate program is an open enrollment program, meaning that any interested prospective students can enroll in the program regardless of previous educational experience. Designed in collaboration with the University's top-ranked Department of Geography, the programs receive guidance from an international advisory board of leaders in geodesign research and practice.

Culminating Product / Recurring AssignmentsProfile of a Global CitizenThe Profile of a Global Citizen is a project designed to inform students and their peers about what it means to be a global citizen. Students will create a profile of a teenager from an area of the world that they are unfamiliar with, and emphasis should be placed on regions that allow for all seven continents to be equally represented.
The prospectus includes an argument with broad implications, demonstrates that the dissertation will make a contribution of knowledge and ideas to the field, demonstrates mastery of existing literature and discourses, and includes a plan and schedule for completion. The courses in the program constitute 21 quarter credit hours in total, and tuition is set at $450/credit. Tuition and fees are the same for California residents, out-of-state students, and international students. Tuition is paid by course upon individual course registration, so the total cost of the program is spread out over the time in which you are enrolled in the program. After conducting exploratory research, students work as a class to identify important current global issues and should settle on 2-3 for the focus of a class discussion.
Students are expected to take the Qualifying Exam before the beginning of the fourth year. The exam focuses on a dissertation prospectus that a student develops with their primary advisor and in consultation with their PhD committee. Each student’s PhD committee consists of at least two members of the Standing Committee and one outside member from another department at the University (and a member of the Faculty Senate). All committees are comprised of at least three members of UCLA Academic Senate.

This section delves into the importance of understanding cultural landscapes and the role of human geography in shaping design decisions. Her professional work is centered upon designing public landscapes with and for the Deaf and disabled communities, applying legal standards and Universal Design principles alongside lived experience and direct participation in the design process. She is an expert in designing landscapes for the Deaf community (DeafScape) and in facilitation of disabled community engagement.
