Craft Research Fund Project Grant

center craft creativity design

Since 2005, the CCCD’s Craft Research Fund grant program has advanced and expanded research about craft in the United States. The program supports innovative research on critical issues in craft theory and history, explores the inter-relationship among craft, art, design and contemporary culture, and fosters new cross-disciplinary approaches to scholarship in the craft field. Center for Craft awards the first round of Craft Research Fund grants, which award $95,000 annually to craft researchers, museums, students, and scholars for craft-related exhibitions, publications, and projects.

Participants

Center for Craft establishes the Stoney Lamar Craft Endowment Fund to support fellowships and internships for emerging artists and curators. Valuing and cultivating the voice of the next generation by providing unrestricted grants to promising undergraduate seniors and by placing internships in prominent institutions. We make a concentrated effort to invite emerging perspectives in the development, participation, and evaluation of programs.

ArtCenter

The Center encourages applications from historically under-represented populations. By recycling and promoting creative reuse, Remainders helps people contribute to the healing of the environment and raises awareness about the benefit of up-cycling raw materials and repurposing usable goods, as opposed to buying these materials new. This pattern of submitting drafts and receiving critiques mimics the structure of most industry projects too. This way, students get a firsthand look at a professional workflow and thought process.

We’re reopening our new National Craft Innovation Hub on November 16!

The offenders proudly displayed their craftsmanship and were eager to talk about their dedication to artistry and entrepreneurship. These include creature design, character design, environmental design, props, vehicles, and how to develop creative skills to craft any of these subjects for a real project. Students begin with studies in concept sketching, anatomy, and visual communications, then move into more specific instructions related to specialties in concept art. In addition to creating high-quality portfolios, students in both programs develop their own signature style which can make them a more sought-after professional in the industry. Since this is an accredited school your credits and degree will transfer to other accredited schools if you ever want to switch or go to grad school. This is a very good choice if you want if you want a traditional bachelor’s degree with actual value to concept art work.

Exhibited projects will span science, engineering, arts, and design and range from technology and innovation to art and culture to sustainability, education, and research projects. CG Spectrum is a completely online school that specializes in personalized education from industry professionals. The school organizes events such as student art shows and portfolio reviews which help students get their art in front of the public and people in the industry looking for new hires. The illustration and visual development programs both focus on art foundations, tools and techniques, presentation ability, and creative skills on working within a client’s specifications. Though this school is located in Singapore, many find it worth relocating because it produces such incredible, industry-ready artists that have an edge over the competition.

Mentorship program created to give emerging craft curators a platform to explore and test new ideas about craft. A national craft innovation hub to connect students, makers, artists, designers, scholars, entrepreneurs, and the businesses/services that support them, for a shared experience of human ingenuity. We serve makers, teaching artists, researchers, organizations, and institutions by activating resources and catalyzing craft communities activating resources and catalyzing craft communities. The two-day retreat on craft publications was convened to discuss and develop specific recommendations for research and publications on craft that were identified as priorities in the March 2002 Summit Retreat on Craft. Before arriving, participants reviewed the initiatives recommended and responding comments from the field published in the North Carolina Summit Retreat on Craft. Center for Craft Executive Director Dian Magie facilitated the meeting.

Center for Craft holds the first Craft Think Tank, gathering thought leaders from around the country to address needs of the craft field. In 2013 the Center for Craft partnered with the American Craft Council and Crafthaus to discuss the brand of craft. The meeting was held October 17 – 19, 2013 at the Montreat Conference Center in Black Mountain, North Carolina and was facilitated by the brand consulting agency, Fenton. Center for Craft and WWC’s 2016 Craft Think Tank was supported, in part, by a grant from the John & Robyn Horn Foundation. You can sort by grant opportunity by clicking on “Grant” or search “Windgate-Lamar” in the search Filter.

Participants in the retreats represented leaders in the field of fine craft – museum directors and curators, university faculty, scholars, editors, critics and artist – with diverse media expertise and geography. Thirty-one craft leaders gave of their time to participate in one or more retreats. Craft is a particular approach to making with a strong connection to materials, skill, and process.

Windgate

Each year, ten undergraduate seniors working in a craft medium or process are awarded a prestigious $15,000 Windgate Fellowship Award. The first article on Emil Milan published as a result of the research grant the Emil Milan Research Team received from the CCCD, 2010. For example, in a 1976 letter to the editor, a reader critiqued George Nakashima’s Conoid Chair design. We’ve included both letters to the editor along with a Conoid Chair so the viewer can be part of that conversation. Application ProcessOnly online applications will be accepted in SlideRoom. The Craft Research Fund expands to include Exhibition Research grants.

EligibilityProposals are welcome from curators, researchers, independent scholars and graduate students. General overhead (indirect administrative expenses) is not eligible for university-based projects. We increase access to craft by empowering and resourcing artists, organizations, and communities through grants, fellowships, and programs that bring people together. Friday and Saturday attendees participated in discussions on seven topics, each with three discussion leaders from the group.

We wrote a very detailed review of CG Spectrum’s concept art diploma course if you wanna check that out. You can see previews of the exercises and how the learning process works. The school bases its learning system on exercises and homework from industry mentors. Students can enroll in the courses alone and receive one-on-one attention from their mentor that runs the course, or they can enroll in a group course with others studying online in a classroom setting. Students on this track take lots of drawing, painting, and sculpting courses as well as classes on designing subjects like characters, costumes, props, and vehicles. Business and art direction courses are included, and students finish off their degree with a senior project.

The second term steps things up with more challenging design projects, introducing limitations and goals similar to what you’d encounter working in a real studio. Learning to design amazing work within the constraints of a project is a crucial skill to develop. Most game studios that care about traditional degrees will prefer that your degree come from an accredited university. But remember, the vast majority of studios do not care how you get good. Learning directly from the best will put you in contact with some of the top artists in the industry, which will give you an edge against the competition.

This allows the craft field space to dance with a concept – to clarify, examine, and document a complexity that allows for growth and deeper understanding. We work to address the scarcity of intellectual engagement with craft in higher education and museums by supporting research and scholarship. The Center for Craft held its 12th Craft Think Tank on October 16-18, 2014 in Asheville, North Carolina. This year’s intimate gathering posed an opportunity to focus on the specific needs of the curatorial community, bringing together a select group of national and international, emerging and experienced curators, artists, and critics. The second day focused on developing a master’s-level program in critical and historical craft studies.

They vary from accredited universities with traditional undergrad and graduate degrees to smaller private schools that specialize in concept art and offer shorter, concentrated classes or even à la carte courses. Research and projects must be completed within the designated timeline as proposed recipient application. Incomplete projects will result in the awardee having to rescind funds. Awardees will not be eligible to apply for a Center for Craft grant or fellowship opportunity in the future if the project remains incomplete.

Graduates are currently employed at major studios like Warner Brothers, Ubisoft, Cartoon Network, and Gameloft. Syn Studio Art School Montreal is located in the downtown core of the city, a famous hub for art and game studios. Overall the education is superb and this is certainly one of the better accredited options much like ArtCenter. CDA has a tuition reimbursement program if you are part of the Animation Guild, Costume Designer’s Guild, or Art Director’s Guild. This is also a nice option if you already have a degree and want to build some new skills to further your education or make a career change. The animation track includes some drawing courses, but focuses more on 2D and 3D mechanics, storytelling, acting, and 3D modeling.

We intentionally work both lean and efficiently, expanding and contracting our resources to fit the needs of each project. We respect, value, and celebrate the unique attributes, characteristics and perspectives that make each person who they are.
